Calgary Laser Surgery:
Frequently Asked Questions
So you’re considering laser surgery for your eyes? Anyone who has worn glasses or contacts over the years has probably given some consideration to receiving this surgery, but something has prevented you from doing it. To give you a little more information about Calgary laser surgery and what it can do for you, we’ve prepared the following FAQ.
What is laser eye surgery?
Laser eye (excimer laser) surgery is a treatment to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. The procedure only needs to be done once, unless the eyes worsen and become nearsighted or farsighted again. Should this happen, a second surgery is not a problem.
Is it safe?
Yes. Millions of patients in Canada, the United States and Europe have successfully undergone the surgery with no side-effects or remissions. Most clinics have a 99% success rate of bringing your eyes to a minimum of 20/40, and 90-95% success rate of repairing your eyes to permanently being 20/20. Even at 20/40, however, vision is primarily restored, restored enough, for instance, to obtain a driver’s license.
LASIK surgery has been around longer than some might suppose. The procedure began in the early nineties, and has now been in the mainstream for almost twenty years. During that time, the surgery has become safer and safer, with fewer side-effects, a quicker recovery period, and greater precision. Now more than ever there is nothing worry about from Calgary laser surgery.
How much does it cost?
While laser eye surgery is initially quite costly, there are ways of handling the cost, and in the long run it will save you money. If you consider the cost of glasses and contact lenses, a cost that is constantly renewed as time goes by and glasses break down or contacts wear out, you’ll quickly understand that the cost of laser surgery, while high, is actually efficient in the end. Cost also varies clinic by clinic, and some places do make LASIK available for less than others.
Does the surgery hurt?
While pain is subjective, almost everyone who underwent the surgery agreed that at most it was mildly uncomfortable for a short period of time. A local anaesthetic is administered to your eye, and your doctor talks you through the procedure as it is occurring. Afterward, you’re required to rest for a while.
What are the post-operative procedures?
Once the surgery is concluded you’ll be required to show up at a series of follow-up appointments to look at your eye. The laser surgery involves some manipulation of your cornea and other parts of your eye, so follow-up appointments are scheduled to determine how quickly your eyes are healing. As well you will be required to put in drops. Both the cost of your follow-up appointments and your drops will be covered by the initial cost of the surgery.
Now that you know a bit more about Calgary laser surgery, perhaps you’ll feel a bit more at ease about making the decision so many of us have also considered making. It goes without saying, however, that when it comes to your eyes, it’s always best to be careful and make sure you’re making the right decision.
